It’s happened to us all, perhaps you were trying to impress a date or got over-confident and went for the Hot Boss spicy. Either way, you’ve now been left with flushed cheeks, a running nose and a burning spice taking over your mouth. Not the best way to impress on a first date.

Well, lucky for you, your frantic search of the internet is over.

We have made a list of all the best (and worst) ways you can get rid of that fiery burn.

We will start with what not to do.

Things to avoid when trying to cool down your mouth

1. Water

Contrary to common belief, water will not help you out in your moment of fiery need. In fact, it might actually make it worse. The spicy molecule capsaicin, which lives in chilli peppers, is oil based. This means that water will simply spread the burning sensation further round your mouth. Not great.

2. (Some) alcohol

Whilst some alcohol will do the trick, others will not. Although beer is a refreshing drink, it certainly doesn’t provide relief in this instance. The high water content in it pretty much means the hot sauce is there to stay. Also, we know that you love any excuse to have a sip of our Hot Boss spiced rum. However, maybe not in this instance. Our Caribbean concoction is not for the faint-hearted, so you should probably put it back on the shelf if hot sauce is too much for you.

Now you know what not to do, here are some answers to help ease your burning pain.

5 WAYS TO COOL DOWN YOUR MOUTH AFTER TOO MUCH HOT SAUCE

1. Milk

You’ve probably heard this one before, but trust us when we say it’s super effective in neutralising even the spiciest hot sauce. This is thanks to the protein casein, which basically acts as a cleaner to your mouth. Your fiery nightmare will be over with just one glug. Make sure your milk is full fat for maximum effect against the warring chillies.

2. Ice cream

Is it dessert time? Well you can make it so with a bowl of vanilla ice cream. As well as tasting delicious, the chilli will be numbed from your mouth as quickly as you can say hot sauce. It works similar to whole milk, but tastes a whole lot better. The choice is yours.

3. Coconut milk

Probably slightly less effective than milk and ice cream but ideal for vegans and vegetarians: coconut milk. You might begin to sense a recurring theme with fats being the best way to fight the attacking casein proteins. Well, coconut is no different. The fat in coconut milk is effective in fighting the chilli from the hot sauce out of your mouth.

4. Alcohol

No, we aren’t contradicting ourselves. Alcohol over 35% will do the trick. As well as giving you a nice buzz, you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of your meal without the burning blaze.

5. Snacks

Now, for the less effective solutions, but ones you will definitely have in the cupboard. To help alleviate the fiery flavour burning your mouth, try a slice of bread, a spoonful of sugar (which does help the medicine go down after all) or some citrus juice. As well as getting your five a day in, some temporary relief will be given.

We hope that now you have reached the end of this article, you can finally read it straight because your eyes have stopped watering from the heat. Too much hot sauce is definitely not ideal, and so please, next time, start with Hot Boss smokey or original. Don’t walk before you can run and choose Hot Boss hot.
